Home to of the Chi-Town Shooters, the local All American Hockey minor league pro team, Dyer, situated in St. John Township, Lake County is where the team's home arena is based out of at the Midwest Training & Ice Center. Dyer is also the home of the Protestant Reformed Christian School (PRCS), a Christian school started by members of the Protestant Reformed Churches.

Dyer, incorporated as a town at the turn of the 20th century on February 8, 1910, like most of Northwest Indiana had its first permanent white settlers in the early 1800. The first historical records in fact date back to 1838.
Aaron Norton Hart, a settler from Philadelphia played a key role in developing Dyer's infrastructure as a town in the from the 1860s through the 1870’s. He supervised construction of the roads and implementation of a drainage ditch system, allowing agricultural and commercial use of the marshy land. Hart was killed in 1883 while working on a ditch near Plum Creek.
Hart Street, one of Dyer's major thoroughfares, bears his name. Hart's wife, Martha Dyer Hart, is the town's namesake.
This upscale community borders Munster to the North, unincorporated St. John Township to the South Lynwood and Sauk Village in Illinois to the West and Schererville to the East. The Illinois state line comprises Dyer's entire Western border.
